The majors have been quick to cash in on the unlikely TikTok-fuelled buzz around city pop phenom Masayoshi Takanaka. Speculation is rife over whether the revenant funk virtuoso is due to release another original album, but for now the man seems content to have ride the magic carpet thermal buoyed by the turned-up heat of his early catalogue, largely from the mid 70s onwards. Universal Music agree: The Rainbow Goblins arrived in March 1981, a concept double album adapted from Ul de Rico's Italian picture book about seven colour-eating goblins. Takanaka performed it in full at the Nippon Budokan concern arena on the day of release, in a yellow jumpsuit with rainbow-dyed hair, playing a Yamaha SG painted to match.
