Few know the late LA rapper and producer Mac Miller had an alter-persona: Larry Lovestein. He and his flagship imaginary band, The Velvet Revival, bridged Miller's hip-hop roots and a then novel jazz sensibility, culminating in the 'You' EP, which was first put out properly as a RSD 2023 release, though it existed unofficially for over ten years before then in mixtape form. The record's flux-core tracks are 'Love Affair' and 'You', hearing an early-twenties Miller trade raps for crooning, buttressed by warm brass, upright bass, and a gentle swing. The EP came after his 2013 breakthroughs, at a moment when Miller sought beyond the confines of hip-hop, experimenting with live instrumentation and crooner aesthetics in a premortem dark horse moment
